What Is the Difference Between Drum Brakes and Disc Brakes


Drum brakes and disc brakes are two common braking methods in automotive braking systems, and they have significant differences in multiple aspects. Here are the main differences between them:

 

1、 The Appearance and Structure of Drum Brakes and Disc Brakes 

 

Drum brake: Its appearance is similar to a bell drum, mainly composed of a brake drum, brake shoes, brake wheel cylinders, etc. The brake shoes are pushed by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure during braking, closely adhering to the inner wall of the brake drum and generating braking force through friction. The brake shoes of drum brakes are usually located inside the brake drum ,  so only a circular drum shaped object can be seen from the outside.

 

Disc brake: Its appearance is disc-shaped, mainly composed of brake discs, brake calipers, brake pads, etc. The brake disc is fixed on the wheel and rotates together with the wheel. When braking, the piston inside the brake caliper pushes the brake pads to press the brake disc, causing the wheels to slow down or stop through friction. The brake pads and discs of the disc brake are exposed to the outside for easy heat dissipation and maintenance.

 

2、 The Working Principle of Drum Brakes and Disc Brakes  

 

Drum brake: The braking force is generated by the friction of the brake shoe on the inner wall of the brake drum. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the brake transmission mechanism pushes the brake shoes outward to closely contact the inner wall of the brake drum, thereby achieving braking.

 

Disc brake: generates braking force through friction between brake pads and brake discs. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the hydraulic system pushes the piston inside the brake caliper, causing the brake pads to press against the brake disc, thereby generating frictional torque to slow down or stop the wheels.

 

3、 Performance Characteristics of Drum Brakes and Disc Brakes 

 

Braking force: Drum brakes, due to their structural characteristics, are usually able to generate significant braking force, especially under heavy or high load conditions. However, this may also cause the vehicle to nod or shake during braking. Although the braking force of disc brakes is relatively small, their braking process is smoother and can provide a better driving experience.

 

Heat dissipation performance: Due to its open design, disc brakes have significantly better heat dissipation performance than drum brakes. After prolonged continuous braking or high-speed driving, disc brakes can quickly dissipate heat, maintaining the stability and reliability of the braking system. Drum brakes, on the other hand, have poor heat dissipation performance due to the concentration of heat inside the brake drum. Prolonged continuous braking may cause the brake drum to overheat, affecting braking effectiveness and safety.

Reaction speed: The reaction speed of disc brakes is usually faster than drum brakes because the contact area between the brake elements (brake pads and brake discs) of disc brakes is larger, the friction is stronger, and they can respond to the driver's braking instructions faster.
